First Admiral Dato' Pahlawan Syed Zahiruddin Putra was born on 27 July 1959 Kuala Kangsar, Perak. He joined the Royal Malaysia Navy on 8 September 1977 after completing his studies in the Royal Military College, Sungai Besi.
He is currently the Commander Naval Region 2, based in Kota Kinabalu. The responsibility of Commander Naval Region 2 covers all the maritime areas of Sabah and Sarawak as well as Labuan. Prior to this command, FADM Dato' Pahlawan Syed Zahiruddin was the Assistant Chief of Staff of Human Resource at the Navy HQ, Kuala Lumpur. He also held a number of command posts such as Commanding Officer of KD YU, KD HANDALAN, RMN PV Team Project, KD MALAYA, KD LEKIU, Commandant of the Royal Military College and various other challenging base appointments as well as RMN ships.
In his naval career, he has attended a few overseas courses such as International Midshipmen in BRNC United Kingdom, Gunnery Specialization course in India, Staff course in Indonesia, Workshop 2000 Meko User in Argentina, Combating Terrorism in Hawaii USA, Combat Management System in Bremen Germany and several others courses in Malaysia. He has a Master Degree in HRM from University of New South Wales, Australia and Diploma in IMDS from Malaysian Technology University, Kuala Lumpur.
He is also accomplished member of Malaysian Institute of HRM. FADM Dato' Pahlawan Syed Zahiruddin likes reading and is a social golfer. He is married to Mariam Suri Ahmad and has 4 children, Sharifah Putri Sakinah (19 years old), Syed Zaidani Putra (15 years old), Sharifah Putri Syahirah (13 years old) and Syed Muzakkir Putra (5 years old).
